NAHSVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A United Methodist clergywoman has been selected
for the first time in 25 years to receive an award recognizing her
leadership in evangelism.
The Rev. Barbara Brokhoff, general evangelist for the Florida Annual
Conference, is the recipient of the 1999 Philip Award, given by the National
Association of United Methodist Evangelists in Dallas. Also receiving the
award is Promise Keepers founder Bill McCartney.
The association, an affiliate group of the United Methodist Board of
Discipleship, has recognized two people for outstanding leadership in
evangelism annually since 1974. 
The award, presented to a United Methodist and someone outside the
denomination, is named in honor of the apostle Philip, the layman, and the
only person in the New Testament called an "evangelist," said Charles
Whittle, the association's executive evangelist in Fort Worth, Texas. 
Brokhoff has held revival meetings and preaching missions, and has been the
preacher at pastors' schools and annual conferences for more than 25 years.
She was the first clergywoman to preach at the annual conference sessions of
Missouri East, North Georgia, South Georgia, Florida, New Mexico, Northwest
Texas and Western North Carolina. 
Through Brokhoff's years of service, "she has been foremost an evangelist, a
bearer of God's good news," Whittle said.
McCartney, chief executive officer of Promise Keepers, the Christian men's
movement, is being recognized because he "is being mightily used by God to
rally hundreds of thousands of men to take seriously their commitment to
Jesus Christ and to live for him in their home, work and community," Whittle
said.
