    Montreat to Host Women's Conference

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Keeping with its long tradition of strongly supporting the 
role of women in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Montreat Conference 
Center is sponsoring its annual Women's Conference Aug. 9-13. 
 
    Sponsored in cooperation with the Women's Ministries Program Area of 
the National Ministries Division, the conference will be entitled 
"Embracing Our Experience: A New Song for a New Day." 
 
    Among the conference leaders will be the Rev. Sheila Gustafson, pastor 
of First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe. N.M., and Fane Downs, author of 
the 1999-2000 "HORIZONS" Bible study, "Old Songs for a New Millennium:  A 
Study of Psalms." 
 
    Music leader will be Melva Costen, professor of worship and music at 
the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Ga., and chair of 
the committee that produced 
"The Presbyterian Hymnal, published in 1990."  Noted theologian and author 
Carol Lakey Hess will serve as worship leader. 
 
    The scheduled evening plenary leaders are Isabel Rogers, former General 
Assembly moderator and retired professor at the Presbyterian School of 
Christian Education;  Mary Jane Patterson, former director of the PC(USA) 
Washington Office; Joan Brown Campbell, general secretary of the National 
Council of Churches; and Barbara Dua, associate director for women's 
ministries for the PC(USA). 
 
    A variety of  workshops will address such topics as "Introduction to 
Feminist Theology," "Women - The Wounded Healers," "Young Adult Women and 
the Church," and "Embracing the Arts."
