Exemplary contribution to religious journalism

CHICAGO, United States of America/GENEVA, 30 April 1999 (lwi)   The
William B. Lipphard Award for Distinguished Service to Religious
Journalism has been awarded posthumously to American journalist and
former editor of Lutheran World Information, Rev. Dr. Roger R. Kahle.

At the time of his death in December 1998, Kahle worked as managing
editor of The Lutheran magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA) and was president of the church news agency, Associated
Church Press (ACP).

Established by the ACP in 1966, the William B. Lipphard Award is the
highest merit that can be conferred by the association. Kahle is the
fifth person to receive the award in its 34-year history.

Susan Kahle received her husband's posthumous award during a chapel
service on 27 April 1999 at the churchwide office of the ELCA in
Chicago.

During the presentation, Mary Lynn Hendrickson and Joe Roos, the ACP
president and executive director respectively, drew particular attention
to Kahle's years of service to the ELCA and the Lutheran World
Federation (LWF).

Individuals selected to receive the award are recognized for
distinguished contributions in the field of religious journalism over a
long period of time, and for possessing the personal qualities and
talents that are considered to be exemplary in the field.

Kahle served with the then LWF Department for Communication from 1979 to
1987 in Geneva and continued to report on behalf of the organization as
seconded staff, most recently at the 1998 LWF Council meeting.

The ACP is an association of 175 member religious publications in the
USA, with a combined circulation of about 28 million copies.
