INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- The Cincinnati Reds baseball team is
"red-hot." While that's good news for Reds fans, it could complicate
accommodations for attendees of the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) General Assembly.

If the Cincinnati team makes the playoffs, the home game stands
could create a shortage of hotel rooms during the Oct. 8-12 biennial
session, according to the Rev. Donald B. Manworren, associate general
minister for administration. He's urging Disciples members to make
housing reservations for the assembly as soon as possible.

Slow-arriving assembly registrations, which could result in a
last-minute flood of housing requests may also complicate matters.
Registrations for the ‘99 assembly currently are behind the pace of
the previous fall gathering, Manworren said. The 1995 Pittsburgh
assembly drew the fewest number of participants ever -- 5,696 --
since the denomination moved to every-two-year gatherings in 1968.

Cincinnati hotels will be free to sell rooms blocked for General
Assembly on or about Sept. 6, said Manworren. Those rooms will sell
quickly and at higher rates, meaning Disciples members will want to
make reservations now to guarantee accommodations at the convention
rate.

Housing forms may be obtained from the Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) website (www.disciples.org/ga99/housing.htm), General
Assembly mailings to local congregations, and by fax from the Office
of Communication. Reservation requests may be returned by fax machine
to the Cincinnati Housing Bureau (Fax: 513-621-2156).
