WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - John F. Watlington Jr., a former chairman of the
board of trustees and member of the executive committee of the Presbyterian
Church in the United States (PCUS) Foundation, died on May 31. He was 88
years old.

He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem
and a former chairman of the board of trustees of Union Theological
Seminary in Richmond, Va.

Watlington was the PCUS Foundation's board chairman from 1978 to 1987
and thus was at the helm during the turbulent time of the 1983 reunion by
which the PCUS and the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of
America (UPCUSA) formed the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He successfully
managed the merger of the churches' foundations.

Watlington, a native of Reidsville, N.C., was a 1933 graduate of
Washington & Lee University. A retired chairman and long-time chief
executive officer of Wachovia Corp., he was inducted into the North
Carolina Business Hall of Fame in 1993. He received honorary doctorate
degrees from William & Mary and Wake Forest universities.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Jones Watlington; a daughter, Anne
W. Curtis, of Memphis, Tenn.; and a son, John F. Watlington III, of
Richmond.
