of Assembly Speakers
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Entertainment legend Steve Allen, who has in recent years
become a prominent crusader against sex and violence in the media, is the
most prominent in an array of special guests who will address special
events associated with the 211th General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), June 19-26 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Other well-known Assembly "stars" are Martin Marty of the University of
Chicago, William Willimon of Duke University, Peter Gomes of Harvard
University, president James P. Wind of the Alban Institute, U.S.
Congresswoman Eva Clayton and President Bill Clinton's pastor, the Rev. J.
Philip Wogaman, of Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington.
Allen, creator and original host of "The Tonight Show" as well as
comedian, actor, singer, composer, author and playwright, will be the
speaker for the General Assembly Media Luncheon June 20. The luncheon is
sponsored by the Pittsburgh-based Presbyterian Media Mission.
Marty will speak at the inaugural General Assembly Breakfast, sponsored
by the Office of the General Assembly and scheduled for June 21.
Willimon will speak at the Presbyterians Pro-Life Buffet June 19.

Theological Seminary.
At least four former General Assembly moderators are scheduled to
address Assembly-related events. The Rev. Douglas Oldenburg (1998) will
preach at the opening service of worship and communion June 20 and will
also speak at the Older Adult Ministry Breakfast June 22. The Rev. John
