GA99011 Board of Pensions Elects New President
PHILADELPHIA-Robert W. Maggs, Jr., a veteran banking executive and
attorney, was elected president of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Board
of Pensions at a special meeting of the board in Long Beach, Calif., May
21.
Maggs is to be presented to the 211th General Assembly for
confirmation. If confirmed, he will begin his work at the Board of
Pensions offices in Philadelphia on July 6.
Maggs brings 27 years of experience in various aspects of banking
management to the board. At Lincoln First Banks in Rochester, NY, he began
as assistant general counsel and advanced through various positions to
become the bank's first corporate human resources director and general
counsel.
When Lincoln First and Chase Manhattan Corporation merged, Maggs played
a large role and was responsible for several staff functions for the Chase
Regional Bank, including public relations and communications, compliance
and law. At Chase, Maggs was chief legal advisor to the Chase vice
chairman of regional banking and also served as managing attorney for the
corporate legal department.
Maggs was raised in Elkhart, Indiana, where he was a member of First
Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Claremont McKenna College in
Claremont, Calif. and received his law degree from the University of
Illinois College of Law in Champaign-Urbana.
Maggs has served as trustee and elder of Third Presbyterian Church in
Rochester and as chair of its personnel committee. He was a member of the
search committee for its pastor. He has also served as a member of the
personnel committee for the Presbytery of Genesee Valley.
In nominating Maggs, William E. Rauh of Yardley, Pa., chair of the
board's search committee, noted some of the reasons the search committee
chose him:
* Maggs' desire to continue the board's commitment to service of
members
* His experience in human resources and as a fiduciary on corporate
benefits committees
* His proven management experience with large complex organizations
* His church experience at both the congregation and presbytery level
of the PC(USA).
Rauh said that Maggs "possesses an exceptional combination of skills
that will provide the Board of Pensions with strong leadership and
management. His demonstrated deep love of the church and its servants
combined with his ability to listen and lead will be important to the Board
as we strive for ways to enhance our service to the church."
"The Holy Spirit was with the search committee as we interviewed
prospective candidates," said Gloria N. Wilson of Phoenix, chair of the
Board of Pensions. "Rob clearly became our unanimous choice because of his
love of the church, his excitement about the position, and his demonstrated
leadership skill."
Maggs succeeds John J. Detterick, who left the presidency of the Board
of Pensions to become the executive director of the General Assembly
Council in July 1998. Since then, David B. Johnson of Wildwood, Mo., has
