Challenged, One Overturned
FORT WORTH With several important judicial cases related to ordination
standards working their way through the church courts of the Presbyterian

faced with three challenges to the proposed slate of candidates to the
church's highest court, the General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission.
Two of the three nominees of the General Assembly Nominating Committee
who were challenged by nominations from the floor survived, but the Rev.
Albert G. Butzer III of National Capital Presbytery was defeated by
challenger the Rev. Christopher Y. Yim of Germantown, Md., also a member of
National Capital Presbytery.
The Rev. Catherine Borchert of Western Reserve Presbytery survived a
challenge by the Rev. Robert Russell of Detroit and Jane Fahey of Atlanta
won election over floor challenger Gordon Schrenk of Charleston-Atlantic
Presbytery.
Seven seats on the 16-member Permanent Judicial Commission were up for
election at this Assembly. Four of the nominating committee's candidates
were not challenged the Rev. Leon Fanniel of Pacific Presbytery, Ernest
E. Cutting of Twin Cities Area Presbytery, Mildred Morales of Southwest
Presbytery in Puerto Rico and Gwen O. Cook of Western Colorado Presbytery.
