              Three Judicial Commission Nominations 
                    Challenged, One Overturned 
 
FORT WORTH  With several important judicial cases related to ordination 
standards working their way through the church courts of the Presbyterian 
Church (U.S.A.), commissioners to the 211th General Assembly here were 
faced with three challenges to the proposed slate of candidates to the 
church's highest court, the General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission. 
     Two of the three nominees of the General Assembly Nominating Committee 
who were challenged by nominations from the floor survived, but the Rev. 
Albert G. Butzer III of National Capital Presbytery was defeated by 
challenger the Rev. Christopher Y. Yim of Germantown, Md., also a member of 
National Capital Presbytery. 
     The Rev. Catherine Borchert of Western Reserve Presbytery survived a 
challenge by the Rev. Robert Russell of Detroit and Jane Fahey of Atlanta 
won election over floor challenger Gordon Schrenk of Charleston-Atlantic 
Presbytery. 
     Seven seats on the 16-member Permanent Judicial Commission were up for 
election at this Assembly.  Four of the nominating committee's candidates 
were not challenged   the Rev.  Leon Fanniel of Pacific Presbytery, Ernest 
E. Cutting of Twin Cities Area Presbytery, Mildred Morales of Southwest 
Presbytery in Puerto Rico and Gwen O. Cook of Western Colorado Presbytery.   
     Judicial Commission members serve a five-year term.
