            Union/PSCE Presents Congregational Awards

Fort Worth-On Wednesday, Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School
of Christian Education held its annual luncheon and presented the
Congregation Awards for 1999. The four awards began in 1980 for local
congregations of the Presbyterian Church for superiority in areas of
outreach and Christian education.
In 1991, the policy changed to make it inclusive of all Presbyterian
Church congregations. A further change was made to make Presbyterian School
of Christian Education responsible for the administration of the award. In
order to provide motivation, assistance, and recognition to these
congregations, a one thousand dollar gift is awarded to each church.
The Sarah Hill Brown Award for Early Childhood Education was given the
Morris Plains Presbyterian Church, Morris Plains, N.J., for providing
quality Christian education and care for preschool education.
Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago, Ill., received the Elinor Curry
Award for Outreach and Social Concern, for its tutoring program which
involves about 550 students. A Kids' Cafe provides meals for about 300
students before the tutoring sessions.
The third award, Katharine Hawes Award for Effective Youth Ministry,
was presented to the University Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, Texas.
Fourth Church focuses youth ministry in two key areas: worship and mission.
The W. T. "Tolly" Thompson Award for Excellence in Christian Education
was presented to two recipients District V, Transylvania Presbytery, Ky., a
cluster of 14 churches that combine skill and resources for the enhancement
of ministry. Co-recipient is University Presbyterian Church, Chapel Hill,
N.C. where 1,500 university students attend church. University is
recognized as a model for campus ministry.
