    by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--With the death toll from the devastating earthquake in
Turkey sure to reach into the tens of thousands, the Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance office this week sent $100,000 to our church partners in the
region for the immediate purchase of tents, medical supplies, lanterns,
food and other humanitarian relief items.

$50,000 has come from funds designated for international disasters and
$50,000 from the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering.

The Middle East Council of Churches, the Presbyterian Church's longtime
partner in the region, has sent a staff specialist and its General
Secretary to Turkey to assess the situation and further assistance needs.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has established a special account for
those wishing to support the relief efforts in Turkey. It is PDA account
#9-2000142-Turkey relief. Donations can be sent through normal giving
channels or to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, 100 Witherspoon Street,
Louisville, KY 40202. Credit card donations using Visa or MasterCard can
be made by calling PresbyTel at 1-800-872-3283 or by visiting the
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance web site at <http://pda.pcusa.org>.
