CINCINNATI (DNS) -- A Brooklyn, N.Y., resident was elected, Oct. 10, as
moderator of the General Assembly of the Indianapolis-based Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ).

Paul Rivera received an enthusiastic endorsement by the Disciples' chief
decision-body, meeting through Oct. 12 in Cincinnati, Ohio. As moderator,
he will preside over the General Assembly and General Board until the
close of the 2001 gathering in Kansas City.

Rivera is currently a project executive for Mall Properties, Inc., a real
estate development firm in New York City. He previously was a senior
project manager from 1996-1999 with Lehrer, McGovern, Bovis, a New York
City construction firm.

The NYC native holds a bachelor of science degree in architectural
engineering (1978) from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn.

An active Disciples layperson, Rivera is a member of Iglesia Cristiana
Sinai in New York City. He has been a prominent leader in the Hispanic
Disciples community. He is a board member of the Pastoral Commission for
Hispanic Ministries and moderator of the Northeast region's Hispanic
Convention.

Rivera was second vice moderator of the Disciples General Assembly from
1995-1997 and has served on the General Board and Administrative
Committee. He was a trustee of New York Theological Seminary from
1988-1996.

Rivera and his spouse, Edda Maria, have one child, Mareza, 10.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in the early
1800s. The denomination has nearly 900,000 members in more than 3,800
congregations in the United States and Canada. Those churches are
concentrated mainly in the Midwest and in Texas.
