Cape Town - A meeting of Church Leaders, held in Johannesburg at the end of
November, expressed its concern at the deteriorating situation in Angola.
The southwestern African country has endured over thirty years of
liberation struggle and civil war.

The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa has begun moves to link
with Congregational Church groups (the result of mission work by the
Disciples of Christ and the United Church of Christ in the United States)
in the country.

The Anglican Church of the Province of South Africa has established a
missionary Diocese of Angola.

In a statement, the Church leader's Forum undertakes to "Launch an
awareness campaign among our constituencies; network with other agencies,
organisations and groupings involved in responding to the crisis in Angola;
and challenge the warring parties, namely the government and the UNITA
rebel movement, to honour the expressed commitment they have made towards
realising justice and peace in Angola".
