In answer to a growing need for a comprehensive resource explaining the
residential schools question, the Anglican Church of Canada will next month
release a special edition of MinistryMatters magazine devoted to the issue.

The special issue, entitled Legacy and Hope, will provide a background and
history of the church's involvement in residential schools, lists of
resources, a pastoral letter from the Primate, a theological reflection,
and personal stories of former students, a priest and former employee of a
school and a former national church staffer who is beginning her career as
a deacon in a British Columbia community deeply affected by a residential
school.

The publication also includes a helpful series of questions -- many of
which those involved in residential schools continually hear raised, both
privately and publicly -- and answers. The questions come from both
Aboriginal and non-natives alike. Questions like: "Sure, there was
suffering then, and I'm sorry it happened, but why should I, or anybody,
have to suffer now because of it?"

(Answer -- in part: "Morally, the church made a decision 30 years ago that
it wanted to seek a new relationship with Aboriginal persons, a
relationship based on equality, partnership and respect. This goal remains
our guiding vision. It is a goal that will require our continued best
efforts, even after the last lawsuit is settled.")

"These are questions that some people seldom voice, but we know are out
there," said Vianney Carriere, editor of MinistryMatters.

Legacy and Hope is the largest print run ever for MinistryMatters. About
7,000 issues will be printed, as Mr. Carriere anticipates a big demand for
the resource. It will be both mailed out and available online in early
January. Unlike a magazine, Legacy and Hope is intended as a long-term
resource. Archdeacon Jim Boyles, General Synod's General Secretary, will
continue to release regular updates to inform the church of what is
happening around residential schools, lawsuits and alternative dispute
resolution. These updates <http://www.anglican.ca/ministry/rs/reports/> are
available at the residential schools section
<http://www.anglican.ca/ministry/rs/> of the Anglican Church of Canada
website. .

This is only the second time that a special edition of MinistryMatters has
been produced around one theme; the first, 1998's Faces&Ministries
<http://www.anglican.ca/mm/1998/faces/>, served as an overview of the staff
and work of the national office of the Anglican Church of Canada. The issue
was produced in conjunction with the convening of the 1998 General Synod in
Montreal.
