Cape Town - Two small Presbyterian churches on islands in the southern
Indian Ocean have signed an agreement for closer co-operation.
Following exchange visits by church leaders in Mauritius and Reunion, the
Indian Ocean Council of Protestant Churches has been formed. In the near
future, it is hoped that the 2 million-member Church of Jesus Christ in
Madagascar (FJKM) will join the Council.

Mauritius is an independent republic within the British Commonwealth. The
Presbyterian Church on the island traces its roots to mission work of the
Church of Scotland and the Paris Mission Society. The dominant faith on the
island is Hinduism.

The island of Reunion is an overseas Department of continental France, and
its Presbyterian Church also originates from the Paris Society. The Roman
Catholic Church has the largest membership on the island.

The two churches plan to share pastoral and training resources..
