Retired Bishop Edward Carroll Sr. dead at 89

Retired United Methodist Bishop Edward G. Carroll Sr. died in Gainesville,
Fla., Jan. 1, six days before his 90th birthday.

Born in Wheeling, W.Va., on Jan. 7, 1910, Carroll was elected a bishop by
the church's Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 1972 and served the
Boston Area until his retirement in 1980.

He earned undergraduate degrees from Morgan State University in Baltimore
and graduate degrees from Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and Union
Theological Seminary in New York.

He was ordained an elder in the former Methodist Church in 1935 and served
as pastor of churches in Maryland, West Virginia and New York. He taught at
Morgan State University for four years and was a chaplain in the U.S. Army
during World War II. He was active in the Urban League and NAACP.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phenola Valentine Carroll, on June 30,
1999. Survivors include a son, Edward Carroll Jr.; a daughter, Nanci; and
two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Jan. 11, at the University United
Methodist Church in Gainesville. Plans for a memorial service at the Boston
University Chapel are incomplete.
