Halbrooks Named President of The Divinity School

Dr. G. Thomas Halbrooks, dean of the faculty at
Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., has been
named the next president of The Divinity School, an American
Baptist-related theological seminary in Rochester, N.Y.
The appointment was announced Dec. 17 by the schools
board of trustees. Halbrooks will take office July 1, 2000,
succeeding Dr. James Evans Jr., who is leaving after 10
years.
An ordained American Baptist minister, Halbrooks holds
an M.Div. degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
and a Ph.D. degree from Emory University. He also spent a
year studying at Oxford University in England.
Halbrooks, who cofounded Baptist Theological Seminary
in 1991, has overseen that school's growth in eight years
from 32 students to 285 students.
He has expressed a vision for The Divinity School
becoming "a congregationally-focused theological
institution...that graduates leaders with a spiritual
dimension that combines piety and social justice."
Halbrooks and his wife, Jean Tackett, a registered
nurse, are parents of a grown son.
The Divinity School, which currently enrolls
approximately 200 full-time and part-time students, is one
of ten seminaries related to American Baptist Churches USA
through Educational Ministries.
