    PC(USA) Schedules Hispanic-Ministries Symposium

Event will be held in El Paso

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- People engaged in ministries with Hispanics will become
acquainted with the new "Hispanic Ministries Strategy" of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) during a symposium to be held in El Paso, Texas, April
27-30.

The strategy, developed through a series of consultations with "a very
large number of knowledgeable Hispanics," is designed to help governing
bodies and Presbyterian leaders "to have a more effective ministry to and
with Hispanics," said the Rev. Roberto Delgado, coordinator of the strategy
development process.

Financial constraints have prevented many of those involved in Hispanic
ministries from taking part, Delgado said, "so the symposium program will
allow participants to have the opportunity to review and possibly revise
and thus buy into the strategy."

The strategy paper describes what the PC(USA) needs to do in the area
of Hispanic ministry and what resources will be required to meet those
needs. The report and its recommendations will be presented to the General
Assembly Council during its Feb. 16-19 meeting.

The strategy addresses such issues as evangelization, new church
development and redevelopment, stewardship and mission funding, ministries
of Anglo congregations and middle governing bodies, bilingual and
multicultural ministries, worship, spiritual formation, education,
community ministries, specialized ministries (children, youth, older
adults), communication, theology, higher education and leadership
development.

In addition to worship, Bible study and theological reflection, the
symposium will include more than 30 workshops on Hispanic-related issues.
Simultaneous translation will be provided in all plenary sessions to
accommodate Spanish and English speakers. Several of the workshops will be
offered in English.

Special activities will be available for youth, under the leadership of
Edwin Andrade, a youth ministries staff member of the Synod of Southern
California and Hawaii.

More information and registration materials are available from Roberto
Delgado at 621 Hillcrest, Denton, TX 76201; phone (940) 382-9750; e-mail
