Presbyterian Women's Birthday Offering
Recipients Announced
Five projects recognized for healing ministries,
providing safe havens
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Presbyterian Women (PW) has announced the five ministry
projects that will be recipients of the 2000 Birthday Offering of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s women's organization.
The recipients are profiled in the January/February issue of
"HORIZONS," the magazine of Presbyterian Women.
The Birthday Offering was begun in 1922. The offering is collected by
PW groups throughout the church in the spring of each year.
This year's offering focuses on two areas of ministry - healing others
and providing a safe haven.
This year's recipients:
* Children of Bethlehem, Sorocabo City, Brazil: an ecumenical agency,
the Bethlehem Children's Association provides basic needs for children from
birth to 8 years old who are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.
* Donaldina Cameron House, San Francisco, Calif.: named in honor of a
woman who devoted 43 years of her life to serving Chinese immigrants to the
Bay Area, Cameron House has served the needs of Asian women and children
for 125 years.
* From Clinic to Community: Treating Lymphatic Filariasis and
Elephantisis, Hospital Ste. Croix, Haiti: in partnership with the Episcopal
Diocese of Haiti and in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control in
Atlanta, the project provides basic health education to women, patient
support groups and training for mid-level medical staff and village health
workers.
* The Women's Healing Center, Branson, Mo.: with victims of domestic
violence currently being housed in motels, the center will now be able to
build a safe facility of its own for women and children in need.
* Women's and Children's Building (Phase II) of the Presbyterian Night
Shelter, Ft. Worth, Texas: With the number of homeless women and children
growing in the area, a new women's and children's building will be
constructed to meet the escalating need.
