Haynes to ABC/USA Economic Justice Post

 Larry Haynes, executive director of Tallahatchie 
Development League, Tutwiler, Miss., and an American Baptist 
home missionary, has been named director of Economic Justice 
for National Ministries effective Feb. 1, 2000.  Haynes also 
will continue to serve in his position with the League, a 
Christian center affiliated with the Neighborhood Action 
Program of National Ministries.
 In his new role Haynes will work to enable American 
Baptists to be active participants in hands-on activities 
that address issues of economic justice.  He will develop 
resources and strategies to integrate economic justice 
concerns into mission and renewal work.  He also will 
oversee National Ministries' investments with minority banks 
and credit unions and recommend additional alternative 
investments.
 Haynes, who has directed Tallahatchie Development 
League (TDL) since 1990, brings to his new post a background 
in organizing people to deal with the problems that arise 
out of poverty.  Recently TDL negotiated extensive local 
financing to develop a complex of low-income housing 
throughout the northwest Mississippi Delta.  Additional 
staff will be hired at TDL to support Haynes in his expanded 
position.
 Commenting on Haynes' appointment, the Rev. Hictor 
Cortez, National Ministries' associate executive director 
for Biblical Justice, said: "Larry brings to the economic 
justice position a genuine passion and love for people along 
with practical skills and knowledge in systems that get 
ministry done.  We look forward to working more closely 
together."
 Prior to his responsibility as TDL director Haynes was 
community development specialist for North Delta Planning 
and Development District in Clarksdale, Miss.
