MONTREAT, N.C. - The clowns are back in town!

Each May, the Montreat Conference Center flings open its portals to
welcome a host of clowns and cloggers, mimes and music-makers, potters and
pastors for a week of high-energy training in recreation leadership. Now
in its 47th year at Montreat Conference Center, the Annual Recreation
Workshop - a hands and feet-on training event for all leaders of the church
who want to incorporate recreation into their ministry - will take place
May 8-13.

The highlight of this year's annual workshop will be a pre-conference
event featuring the gifts of Albert Alter, an internationally-acclaimed
entertainer, clown, mime and physical comedian. Alter will also be on hand
throughout the week to offer courses in both beginning and advanced
clowning.

"After 46 years," noted Glenn Bannerman, professor emeritus of
recreational and outdoor ministry at Union Theological
Seminary-Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va., and a
conference leader, "the Annual Recreation Workshop is still on the cutting
edge of church recreation. There isn't another conference that helps
individuals explore and experience play, worship, spirituality, creative
expression and rejoicing the way ARW does."

Course offerings by the country's leading recreation leadership
specialists will address such creative topics as "Dulcimer Making," "Holy
Motion," "Papercrafts," "Popcorn and Theology! Life, Faith and Fun at the
Movies!" and "Recreation with Dance, Music and Movement."
