Dua Steps Down as Women's Ministries' Head
for New Mexico Post
by Evan Silverstein
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - On Wednesday, the National Ministries Division (NMD) said
goodbye to the Rev. Barbara Dua, associate director for the denomination's
Women's Ministries Program Area. She will soon depart for a position as
executive secretary of the New Mexico Council of Churches in Albuquerque,
N.M.
"Barbara has given unselfishly of her talents and resources," said the
Rev. Curtis A. Kearns Jr., the NMD director. "Her contributions to the
division and the council will certainly be missed. We wish her Godspeed,
and say a heartfelt 'thanks' for the ministry she has provided."
Dua assumed her current post as leader of the program area in April
1997. Prior to joining the national staff she served as associate pastor at
First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, N.C., and had previously served as
pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wooster, Ohio. She was also
campus minister at the College of Wooster.
"It has been great serving with you...and getting to know you," Dua
said when her departure was announced during the NMD meeting.
Her stay as associate director was not always pleasant, especially when
it came to matters involving the National Network of Presbyterian College
Women (NNPCW), which Dua oversaw. Conservative critics had charged during
the 1998 General Assembly that the Network's programs and resources
violated denominational policies and the church constitution in the areas
of ordination, human sexuality and theology. A move then to eliminate
NNPCW's funding failed, and a task force was appointed to recommend
corrective measures.
