PRAYER WEEKEND FOR BURMA SET

American Baptists will be among individuals and
communities of faith who will join together in prayer for
the people of Burma (Myanmar) March 11-13, 2000.
American Baptists' relationship with Burma extends
back to the early 1800s, when Adoniram Judson first shared
the Gospel with the people of Burma. Today 50 percent of
all Burmese Christians (who make up less than 7 percent of
the population) are Baptists, an estimated 600,000 people.
The Rev. Keith Tennis, American Baptist International
Ministries area director for Southeast Asia and China, has
noted, "Burma is ruled by a military regime, and the weekend
of prayer is designed to lift up the many Christians and
other peoples of Burma. This country is facing very
difficult times and restrictions imposed by their government
and need our encouragement and prayer support."
