GAC Approves Property Transfer for Barber-Scotia College
by Evan Silverstein
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Property at Barber-Scotia College, now owned by the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), will be transferred to the school thanks to
an action taken by the General Assembly Council (GAC) during its meeting
here on Saturday, Feb. 19.
GAC approval came as part of a recommendation from the National
Ministries Division Committee in conjunction with Mission Support Services.
The church and the Presbyterian-affiliated school in Concord, N.C., had
been engaged for some time in negotiations to transfer the property to the
school's board of trustees.
Ownership of the property, which has an estimated market value between
$10 million and $12 million, will enable Barber-Scotia to more fully shape
its own future, while at the same time maintaining a covenant partnership
with the PC(USA) and participation in the Christmas Joy Offering, the
recommendation said.
The college is a four-year, coeducational institution accredited by the
Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. The college was financially
stressed in the mid-'90s, but has made progress in building a more secure
financial base.
"With excellent cooperation, the appropriate officers of the National
Ministries Division (NMD), Mission Support Services (MSS), Legal Services
and Property Services have crafted a document which expressed both the long
and faithful partnership of the Presbyterian Church and Barber-Scotia
College, and the technical details of the transfer," the recommendation
said.
Expenses related to the transfer of ownership are being covered by the
budgets of NMD, MSS, Legal Services and Property Services.
