PC(USA)-Produced Documentary on South Africa
Will Air Palm Sunday
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-"The New South Africa: A Journey of Faith," a 60 minute
documentary produced by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of
Communication, will premiere nationwide on the Odyssey Cable Network on
Palm Sunday, April 16 at 4:00 p.m. (Eastern and Pacific).
After a brief summary of the issues which led to South Africa's ridding
itself of apartheid in 1994, the program explores the integral role of the
faith community in recent race reconciliation efforts. Three stories
illustrate the challenges and rewards of creating new relationships among
former adversaries. The final segment looks to the future and suggests the
story is far from over in South Africa.
The program concludes that the common struggle for improved race
relations in the United States and South Africa makes the South African
case extremely relevant to the American audience. The successes and
continuing struggles profiled in "The New South Africa: A Journey of Faith"
suggest true reconciliation must take place on an individual level and
churches are an integral part of the process.
