MISSIONARIES SAFE AS TURMOIL CONTINUES IN BOLIVIA
American Baptist missionaries in Bolivia are reported
safe as civil unrest there continues.
The country's largest union has called for a nation-
wide strike today in response to President Hugo Banzer's 90-
day state of emergency decree. Last week peasant unions, in
protest against a possible substantial increase in water
prices, set road blocks on several national highways in five
of the nine provinces. The protests resulted in a series of
violent incidents that has claimed at least five lives.
American Baptist missionaries Evelyn and Omar Almonte
in Santa Cruz and Mario and Iris Morales in Cochabamba are
said to be safe as long as they remain in their homes.
Although mass communications in Bolivia now have been
affected, Omar Almonte was able to contact International
Ministries and request prayers for their safety and for the
situation in Bolivia.
