	Notes about People

	In what was announced as a first step in the reorganization of the
Congregational Ministries Division, division director the Rev. Donald G.
Campbell has announced the appointment of Sandra Moak Sorem as "CMD
Publisher."  She will continue to serve as Mission Interpretation &
Promotion publisher and will take on new responsibilities as Curriculum
Publishing Program Area publisher.   The General Assembly must approve the
move.
	Sorem is currently associate director of the Stewardship Program Area and
coordinator of Mission Interpretation and Promotion.  She has served on
national staff in various mission interpretation and promotion and
stewardship capacities since prior to Presbyterian reunion in 1983.

	At its March meeting, the Presbytery of Grand Canyon named the Rev. Robert
V. Chapman executive presbyter emeritus.
	Including an earlier stint with the former Board of National Missions,
Chapman served the presbytery for more than 25 years.  He retired as
executive presbyter in 1998.

	The Rev. Robert F. Stevenson, longtime associate stated clerk of the
General Assembly, died April 19 in Springfield, Mo.  He was 78.
	Stevenson, a Missouri native, graduated from Pittsburgh Theological
Seminary and pastored churches in Missouri and Kansas before joining the
staff of United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America stated
clerk William P. Thompson in 1967.  He served in that position for 20 years.
	 A memorial service was held April 22 at First and Calvary Presbyterian
Church in Springfield.  Stevenson is survived by his wife of 57 years,
Irene; two sons, John and Paul; six grandchildren; and one great
granddaughter.

	The Rev. Bryant Mays Kirkland, minister emeritus and for more than 25 years
pastor of New York City's largest Presbyterian church -- Fifth Avenue
Presbyterian Church -- died of heart failure on Easter Sunday, April 23.  He
was 85.
	Born in Essex, Conn., Kirkland, graduated from Princeton Theological
Seminary.  Known as one of the greatest preachers of his age, he served
pastorates in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Oklahoma before going to the
Fifth Avenue church, where he served as pastor from 1962-87.
	A memorial service was scheduled for May 5 at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian
Church.

	Randy Naylor, associate general secretary for communication and
interpretation for the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.
(NCC), has resigned, effective Sept. 8, 2000.
	Naylor, a Canadian, has served in the post since May 1997.  In a note to
colleagues in NCC-member churches, Naylor said he wanted to complete work on
a long-delayed Ph.D.

	The Rev. Thomas G. Long, who left Princeton Theological Seminary three
years ago to spearhead development of the Geneva Press imprint for the
Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, is returning to academia.
	Long has accepted an appointment as professor of preaching at Candler
School of Theology in Atlanta.  He will leave Geneva Press in August to
prepare for the 2000-2001 school year.

	Marvin A. (Vin) Harwell III, 53, who has served the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) prominently, died April 11 at his home after a four-year battle
with colon cancer.
	A native of Alabama, Harwell graduated from Louisville Presbyterian
Theological Seminary and served pastorates in Washington, D.C., Florida,
Virginia and Delaware.  He was a passionate advocate for social justice and
a broadly-inclusive church and society.
	A memorial service was held April 16 at First & Central Presbyterian Church
in Wilmington, Del.
