LANGHORNE NAMED DIRECTOR OF CHAPLAINCY AND
PASTORAL COUNSELING FOR NATIONAL MINISTRIES
The Rev. Dr. George A. Langhorne, director of
Missionary and Staff Services for National Ministries,
American Baptist Churches USA, has been named director of
Chaplaincy and Pastoral Counseling with National Ministries.
He will assume his new responsibilities Aug. 1, following
the retirement of the Rev. Dr. William C. Cline from the
position.
As director of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Counseling
Langhorne will serve as the endorsing agent for American
Baptist Churches USA. In this role he will serve as the
liaison for the 800-plus chaplains and pastoral counselors
endorsed by the denomination who also serve as American
Baptist home missionaries.
Langhorne joined National Ministries' staff in April
1999. As director of Missionary and Staff Services he
coordinated missionary recruitment and training for the
American Baptist Home Mission Societies as well as staff
relations with the 1,400 American Baptist home missionaries
currently associated with National Ministries. Langhorne
also monitored, updated and interpreted human resources
policies and procedures and compensation and benefits for
National Ministries.
Prior to his service with National Ministries
Langhorne was an active duty Navy chaplain for 25 years. In
1993 he was named American Baptist Military Chaplain of the
Year. He also served on the American Baptist Ministers
Council Senate.
Langhorne has pastored several churches, including
Butler Street Baptist Church, Atlanta, Ga.; First Baptist
Institutional Church, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Macedonia
Baptist Church, Heathsville, Va.; and Beulah Baptist Church,
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Langhorne holds a B.A. degree from Virginia Union
University, an M.Div. degree from Pittsburgh Theological
Seminary, an M.A. degree in Management and Human Resources
from Pepperdine Univeristy, and an Ed.D. degree in
Curriculum and Instruction from United States International
University, San Diego, Calif. He also has earned
recognition for developing and conducting racial diversity
workshops and has taught graduate-level courses in human
resources management.
In announcing Langhorne's new appointment, Dr. Aidsand
F. Wright-Riggins III, executive director of National
Ministries, said: "I am pleased and excited that Dr.
Langhorne will be directing the Chaplaincy and Pastoral
Counseling office. He will continue a tradition of solid
support to the hundreds of American Baptist chaplains and
pastoral counselors who serve as home missionaries, both in
military and institutional settings, literally around the
world."
