The Rev. William J. Fogleman, a native Texan who was instrumental in
bringing about Presbyterian reunion in 1983, died May 24 after a long
illness. He was 72.
Fogleman, born in Teague, Texas, graduated from Austin College and Austin
Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He ventured as far away as neighboring
Arkansas, pastoring the Presbyterian Church in Lonoke from 1953-1955 and
serving as director of Christian education for the Synod of Arkansas until
1960. He then returned to Texas, where he taught for three years at Austin
Seminary. Following a four year pastorate at Second Presbyterian Church of
Little Rock, Ark., he went back to Texas in 1967, where he remained for the
rest of his career. Fogleman served as executive presbyter for Brazos
Presbytery from 1967-1973 and then as executive of the Synod of Red River
from 1973-1980.
As Presbyterian reunion approached, the Synods of Red River (former PCUS)
and Sun (UPCUSA) established a joint operating agreement in 1980. Fogleman
served as the executive for both synods until 1983 when the synods
officially reunited and became the Synod of the Sun. He served as synod
executive until his retirement in 1993.
Bill Fogleman is survived by his wife, Marjory; four children - Krista,
William Jr., David and Katherine, and several grandchildren. Services were
held May 26 at Wimberley (Texas) Presbyterian Church.
