	Notes about People

	Marlin VanElderen, 54, executive editor for the Communication Department of
the World Council of Churches, died suddenly June 12 of a heart attack at
his home in Geneva, Switzerland.  He was a member of the Christian Reformed
Church in North America.
	VanElderen, a member of the Christian Reformed Church in North America,
joined the WCC as a consultant in the Communication Department in 1980.  In
1982 he became editor of the monthly magazine, "One World," and in 1994 he
was appointed executive editor for all WCC publications.
	In the U.S., Van Elderen worked for Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company. 
^From 1971 until 1981 he was managing editor and later editor-in-chief of the
"Reformed Journal."  VanElderen was a member of the Board of Directors of
the "Associated Church Press" (1977-1980) and consultant to the magazine
"The Banner" from 1974-1980.
	He leaves his wife Meribeth; his four daughters Kimberly, Amy, Abigail and
Elizabeth; and his parents, Mr and Mrs Bas VanElderen.

	The World Mission Initiative of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the New
Wilmington Missionary Conference have announced the appointment of the Rev.
Donald Dawson as director of both organizations.  He begins his new work
July 10.
	A graduate of Westminster College in Pennsylvania and Union Theological
Seminary in Virginia, Dawson has been pastor of Hampton (Pa.)United
Presbyterian Church since 1982.  He has long been deeply involved in both
organizations he has now been called to direct.
	The World Mission Initiative was created in 1996 to mobilize Presbyterians
around global mission.  The New Wilmington Missionary Conference, held each
mid-summer, is now in its 95th year.

	The Rev. Theodore A. ("Theo") Gill has been named to a newly created
position as associate and editor for the Office of Theology and Worship in
the Congregational Ministries Division in Louisville.  He begins his new
work in September.
	Gill is currently an associate in the Department of Governing Body,
Ecumenical and Agency Relationships in the Office of the General Assembly. 
He previously served as a parish pastor, campus minister and editor of
"Monday Morning" magazine, as well as for the Kentucky Council of Churches.
	In his new position, he will work with publishers of theological materials,
Gill will edit two journals of practical theology: "Reformed Liturgy and
Music" and "The Register of the Company of Pastors."

	The Rev. Jerry L. Van Marter, coordinator for News Services for the Office
of Communication in Louisville, has been elected president of Kentucky
Professional Communicators, the coeducational state affiliate of the
National Federation of Press Women.  He was elected to a two year term.

	Edith Patton has been named interim synod executive for the Synod of the
Covenant, starting Oct. 1 for a two year period.  Patton is currently
interim executive presbyter for Maumee Valley Presbytery in that synod and
previously served as interim executive presbyter for Scioto Valley
Presbytery, also in the Synod of the Covenant.
