RICHMOND, Va. - Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of
Christian Education honored four Presbyterian congregations for effective
work as recipients of the annual Congregational Awards.  Each carries a
$1,000 contribution to assist congregations in their ministries.  Recipients
are: Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Vandergrift, Pa., for an
exceptional Christian education program that enables the church to reach out
to 80 children each week, the W. T. "Tolly Thompson Award for Excellence in
Christian Education; the Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church Preschool in Tampa,
Fla., for its inclusion of special-needs children into the curriculum, the
Sarah Hill Brown Award for Early Childhood Education; the Bryn Mawr
Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, Pa., for its youth ministry, the Katharine
Hawes Award for Effective Youth Ministry; and The Seeds of Hope Program of
First Presbyterian Church in Casa Grande, Ariz., for its work with 15
churches to reach an at-risk population with job and leadership training,
the Elinor Curry Award for Outreach and Social Concern.

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. - The San Francisco Theological Seminary Distinguished
Alumna Award was presented this year to H.A. Lynnell Jones, in recognition
of her service as founder and director of the San Francisco Theological
Seminary Children's Center and her ministry to the families of the seminary
and community.  Opened in 1980, the center is now licensed to serve 24
children and has the reputation of being one of the finest pre-schools in
Marin County.  The award was presented at commencement.

DECATUR, Ga. - At its annual Alumni/ae Association meeting in April,
Columbia Theological Seminary presented its "Distinguished Service Award" to
John N. Somerville, Class of 1953, and Harry F. Peterson, Class of 1958. 
Somerville served as a missionary in Korea for 41 years and helped to found
Hannam University in Tejon, where he taught for 26 years.  Peterson, too,
was a missionary, serving in Taiwan, Nigeria and Ghana.  Peterson also
founded and operated Villa International in Atlanta, a hospitality center
for overseas guests.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville Theological Seminary has been named an approved
theological institution for ministers and lay people in the African
Methodist Episcopal Zion (AME) Church.  The agreement was announced by the
Mid-West District of the AME Zion Church, Bishop Enoch B. Rochester, and
LPTS's President John Mulder. This is the third of three partnerships the
seminary has created with predominantly African American denominations,
including the African Methodist Episcopal Churches of the 13th Episcopal
District and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Seminary Association has recognized three of its
members for extraordinary contributions to the church.  Receiving the 2000
ASA Awards for Service were Fane Downs, John Evans and John Ed Withers. 
Downs is the pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Midland, Texas and has
served numerous denominational organizations, including the executive board
of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians; Evans was the seminary's vice
president for development and church relations and was honored for his
lifetime commitment to Presbyterian Church institutions; Withers has served
a number of congregations, including serving 16 years at the Church of the
Savior in Oklahoma City, Ok.
