Jane Parker Huber is named head of Women's Ministries

	by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jane Parker Huber, noted Presbyterian hymn-writer and
longtime Presbyterian Women activist, has been named interim associate
director for the Women's Ministries Program Area in the National Ministries
Division.

Huber's appointment was announced June 2 by division director the Rev.
Curtis A. Kearns Jr. She begins her new work June 5.

Huber succeeds the Rev. Barbara Dua, who resigned in March to become
executive secretary of the New Mexico Council of Churches.

Huber steps into her new post at a crucial time for the Women's Ministries
Program Area. In a controversial decision in April, the General Assembly
Council's Executive Committee voted to extend a routine review of the
program area, which has come under criticism by conservative groups in the
PC(USA). Last year's General Assembly asked that the previously-scheduled
Women's Ministries review be moved up three months so as to be completed
before this year's Assembly.

Though the routine review by the denomination's Research Services found
considerable support for the program area among its constituents, the
Executive Committee decided that the Assembly had called for a broader
review of women's ministries.

Huber is no stranger to the Women's Ministries Program Area, having served
as interim coordinator for Presbyterian Women from mid-1997 until early in
1998.
