LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the leaders of North Korea and South Korea scheduled
to meet June 12-14 in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) stated clerk the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, has issued a call
to prayer for peaceful reunification to all Presbyterians.

A Call to Prayer for Reunification of South and North Korea

May 31, 2000

Dear Colleagues in Ministry in Christ:

I am writing to invite the churches and individuals in the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) to prayer for the reunification of North and South Korea.
On June 12 - June 14, 2000 the two heads of state of South and North Korea,
Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il, will meet in Pyong Yang, the capital city of
North Korea. This meeting will be a most significant, historic event in
the life and history of Korea since the division and war in the divided
peninsula more than half a century ago.

Numerous General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have made
statements confirming our hope for the reconciliation of South and North
Korea; expressing our sadness over the fact that there are millions of
people in Korea who have been separated from their families for more than
thirty years; and affirming our commitment to work for the eventual
reunification of divided Korea. In fact, the 206th General Assembly (1994)
proclaimed 1995 as the Jubilee Year for Peace and Reunification.

On behalf of the General Assembly, I urge all churches and individuals to
engage in a special time of earnest prayers for the leaders of North and
South Korea as they meet next weekend, that the meeting will result in
reconciliation - the heart of the Christian message -, peaceful
reunification and restoration of a new order that will bring reunion of
Korea and the millions of divided Korean families.

Yours in Christ,

Clifton Kirkpatrick
Stated Clerk of the General Assembly
