LONDON, Great Britain/GENEVA, 8 June 2000 (LWI) - The Lutheran Church in
Great Britain (LCiGB) installed its first bishop at a service in London
on 27 May 2000. Walter Jagucki, pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in
Leeds and formerly dean of the LCiGB, was installed by the Very Rev.
Robert Patkai, dean of the Hungarian Lutheran Church in Britain, and
three bishops from sister Lutheran churches in Sweden, Poland and the
USA.

The capacity congregation at St. Anne's Lutheran Church in London
included representatives of the Roman Catholic Bishops' Conference in
England and Wales, the Church of England, the Greek Orthodox Church, the
Free Churches' Council, and the Salvation Army. The deputy general
secretary, Agneta Ucko, represented the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).

Established in 1962 to serve English-speaking Lutherans in Great
Britain, the LCiGB joined the LWF in 1988. With a membership of 2,750,
the church also includes congregations that worship in Amharic, Chinese,
Polish and Kiswahili. It is one of 11 members represented on the
Lutheran Council of Great Britain (LCGB).

Most other churches represented on the LCGB are under the care of
bishops in their home countries or elsewhere overseas and non-English
speaking. The LCiGB is the only Lutheran church represented on the
Council with a bishop in Britain.

Lutheran bishops participating in the installation included the Rt. Rev.
Martin Lind, bishop of Linkoeping (Church of Sweden); the Rt. Rev. Jan
Szarek, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg
Confession in Poland; and the Rt. Rev. Floyd Schoenhals, bishop of
Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

(The LWF is a global communion of 128 member churches in 70 countries
representing 59 million of the world's 61 million Lutherans. Its highest
decision making body is the Assembly, held every six or seven years.
Between Assemblies, the LWF is governed by a 49-member Council which
meets annually, and its Executive Committee. The LWF secretariat is
located in Geneva, Switzerland.)
