Kaleidoscope 2000 to present unity in a
     fragmented world through images, drama,
                music and words

	by Bill Lancaster

LONG BEACH, June 23 - A live band, a drama team, media, singing, and spoken
words will all be a part of a special unity and diversity celebration,
Kaleidoscope 2000, which will be here Sunday afternoon in the Terrace
Theater as part of the 212th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.).

Organizers hope that elements of the celebration, based on the Assembly
theme “For all are one in Christ,” can be a model for unity and diversity
conferences in synods, presbyteries and congregations. “Kaleidoscope” was
chosen for the name of the event because through a kaleidoscope “you see a
lot of different colors and shapes, so that speaks to the diversity of our
church, and yet it’s a whole, which speaks to the unity of our church,” said
the Rev. Dennis Cobb, manager of Assembly programing, one of the planners of
the event.

Each person registering for the Assembly is given a small plastic
kaleidoscope through which viewers see their surroundings in prismatic
patterns. The logo for the event has the elements of the Presbyterian logo
“fractured out” in a kaleidoscope pattern with the whole image in the
center.

“I suppose in some ways it could be called an ‘edutainment’ event because
we hope it will appeal to different ways of learning--there will be spoken
parts of it, there will be singing, music, and visual elements to appeal to
a wide range of people,” Cobb said.

Key leaders of the celebration are the Rev. Douglas Adams, professor of
Christianity and the Arts at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif.,
who will lead a Biblical reflection; the Rev. James Reese, interim executive
presbyter of the Presbytery of New York City, who will lead a theological
reflection; the Rev. Karen Hernandez-Granzen, pastor of Westminster
Presbyterian Church in Trenton, N.J., who will lead a litany of celebration;
and David Young, a photographer for Mission Interpretation and Promotion and
the Communications Office, General Assembly Council, who will present visual
images. Baptism will be a keynote theme since it is a unifying point.

The GenX Band of Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles will provide
contemporary Christian music. The drama team will provide continuity
between elements in the celebration, portraying commissioners coming to the
Assembly and responding to the presentations. Corey Nelson, producer and
manager for the Thuma Mina Mission Theater Company, coordinated the event.
