Program started by SFTS now includes all 10 seminaries

LONG BEACH, June 24–More than 50 theological students from all 10
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) seminaries are earning classroom credit while
learning about the General Assembly.

Entitled "Presbyterianism: Principles and Practice," the for-credit class
is led by the Rev. Jack Rogers, recently retired vice-president of San
Francisco Theological Seminary, who began the program several years ago with
just a handful of students from SFTS.

The program is now co-sponsored by the seminary, the Committee on
Theological Education and the Office of the General Assembly. It is
designed to inform seminarians about the structure and mission of the
PC(USA), provide first-hand experience related to how a General Assembly
works, and encourage focus on issues currently being debated within the
denomination.

Class participants follow a schedule nearly as rigorous as commissioners.
In addition to attending events and meetings of the Assembly, they hear
briefings by denominational leaders, learn about special interest groups
that lobby the Assembly, join in worship and participate in debriefing
sessions each day that help them process what they have seen and heard.

To receive full credit, they must complete a journal of their experience,
read several background papers and write a 10-15 page paper.
