Rhee names Rebecca McElroy to be vice-moderator

	Missouri elder was moderator's nominator

	by Jerry L. Van Marter

LONG BEACH, June 25–General Assembly moderator Syngman Rhee today named
Elder Rebecca McElroy of Missouri Union Presbytery as his vice-moderator.
She gave Rhee's nominating speech to the Assembly Saturday night.

McElroy, a member of Big Creek Presbyterian Church in Hannibal, Mo., comes
from a farm family and is currently moderator of Missouri Union Presbytery.

She and Rhee became friends more than 10 years ago after "The Presbyterian
Layman" published an article accusing Rhee of being a communist sympathizer
because of his support for Korean reunification. McElroy, who was the
first woman member of the Presbyterian Lay Committee, to which she still
belongs, reached out to the deeply hurt Rhee and the two have become close
friends during the ensuing years.

Though they disagree on many issues, Rhee told reporters at his
post-election press conference that "maybe this will give a hint of what
could really happen if the church could work this way."
