Commissioner directs Massanetta redevelopment

by Midge Mack

LONG BEACH, June 26 - Since 1922 Massanetta, the traditional conference
center of the mid-south, has been cherished by those who first met future
spouses, first accepted Christ, or first heard a call to ministry during a
church-related event there. The Synod of the Mid-Atlantic closed it during
the late '80s, but it was reopened in 1991 and David Hubler was hired to
take over its "resurrection."

This week Hubler has turned his attention to the business of the 212th
General Assembly and especially the Committee on Pensions and Benefits,
where he serves as an elder commissioner from Shenandoah Presbytery.

Hubler credits the changes at Massanetta to establishing an independent
Board of Directors, while maintaining a covenant of specific support with
the synod. This allowed concentrated professional visioning and development
of a master plan for the facility.

Youth camps were reinstated in 1997, with 180 in attendance. This year’s
enrollment will top 450. A middle school conference started in the mid-'90s
now serves over 900 young teens. The first new building in more than 35
years will be dedicated at the 78th annual Bible Conference in October,
evidence of the Center's current capital fund campaign, which has already
reached 80 per cent of its $2.5 million goal.

Open year-round, Massanetta hosts conferences of Synod Women, Synod Men,
Logos, groups from other denominations, Elderhostel and non-profit
organizations. Its full-time staff of 14 increases during the summer to 40
or 50.

A long-time Presbyterian, Hubler has been a consultant on college campuses
across the country for the past 23 years.
