	PHEWA presents annual awards

Marks beginning of Year of the Child

	by Nancy Rodman

LONG BEACH, June 26 -- The Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare
Association (PHEWA) presented its annual awards Monday evening while marking
the start of the Year of the Child by citing programs focusing on the needs
and gifts of children and youth.

The Boston Area Youth Organizing Project received the Community Ministries
and Neighborhood Organizations Award for its work to bring the power of God
to bear through community organizing. The Boston Area Youth Organizing
Project is a faith and school based organization formed to develop
leadership among seventh-to twelfth-grade young people. More than 500 youth
from more than 40 congregations, schools and organizations in the Boston
area are involved in the program. Participants are trained to make changes
in their communities through positive initiatives, building relationships,
identifying critical issues, and planning and evaluating programs.

The Margaret Fuad Award also recognized a child-centered program, GLAD
(Give a Life a Dream) House. GLAD House, founded by Beatrice Lampkin in
Cincinnati, Ohio, provides a safe place for children ages six to eleven
whose mothers are low income, homeless, and addicted to alcohol and other
drugs. GLAD House gives continuing support to children and their families
through after school and summer programs that include therapy, tutoring, and
recreation. Through GLAD House programs, children learn life skills and
substance abuse prevention.

Continuing the Year of the Child theme, president Lois Rifner announced
that PHEWA will hold a Year of the Child kick-off event on the plaza on
Thursday evening.

Other awards presented Monday evening were the first annual Florence I.
Kraft Award honoring North Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo, Michigan, for
outstanding accomplishments in ministry to mental health consumers, and the
David Hancock Award given by the Presbyterian Network on Alcohol and Other
Drug Abuse to the Rev. Ralph McCormack for outstanding leadership.
