Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Rev. Merrill Cook, who was instrumental in the development of PresbyNet
and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Internet web site, has been fired.
Cook, whose title was administrator for Internet services, served on the
national staff for nearly 10 years. Prior to coming to Louisville, he was a
pastor and stated clerk of Whitewater Valley Presbytery. He is a graduate of
San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Due to the confidentiality of personnel records and decisions, the reason
for Cook's firing was not made public.

The Board of Trustees of San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) has
announced its appointment of the Rev. James G. Emerson Jr. as interim
president, effective Sept. 1.
Emerson, a graduate of Stanford University and Princeton Theological
Seminary, has been actively involved in the life of SFTS over the years. He
has been a member of the boards of trustees of both the seminary and the
Graduate Theological Union in nearby Berkeley, Calif. He and his wife,
Margaret, have co-chaired the Advisory Board for the Lloyd Center Pastoral
Counseling Service at the seminary.
After he retired as pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco
in 1990, the Emersons served as volunteers in mission for the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), preaching and teaching in Taiwan, India, China, Korea and
the United States. In 1995 they served as visiting professors of mission
and evangelism at SFTS.
Emerson assumes the presidency in the wake of a sexual misconduct scandal
that cost former SFTS president the Rev. Don McCullough his job in May.

The Rev. Carl Horton, a pastor from Lincoln, Neb., has been named
coordinator for pastor, educator and lay leader support in the Christian
Education and Leader Development program area of the Congregational
Ministries Division. He succeeds the Rev. Marvin Simmers, who retired
earlier this year.
Horton, a graduate of Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., and
Princeton Theological Seminary, served fiver years as associate pastor at
St. James Presbyterian Church in Tarzana, Calif., and then as associate
pastor for spiritual life and growth at Westminster Presbyterian Church in
Lincoln. He is a doctoral candidate at San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Horton has served as a leader at Montreat Youth Conferences, the Annual
Recreation Workshop, the Presbyterian Youth Connection Assembly, and will be
Recreation Coordinator at the Presbyterian Youth Triennium in 2001. He is
currently working on a resource for a spiritual discernment model in the
nomination and election of church leaders.
He will begin his new work in mid-September.

	###

The Rev. James McDonald, a Presbyterian minister, has been named vice
president for programs and policy for Bread for the World, an ecumenical
Christian movement against hunger. He has been the organization's senior
international policy analyst since 1998.
This year McDonald celebrates his 25th year of ordination. He served
congregations in Bloomington, Ind., and Philadelphia before serving as
director of the Humphrey Fellowship Program at American University in
Washington, D.C. He also taught at American and at George Washington
University.

	###

Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold of the Episcopal Church will undergo
surgery for early-stage prostate cancer in September.
Griswold said the cancer was detected in a routine PSA (prostate specific
antigen) test last month. His surgery is scheduled for Sept. 11.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men, with an
estimated 180,400 cases predicted for 2000. At current rates, it is
estimated that 1 in 3 American men will develop prostate cancer in his
lifetime.
