New resource on adoption is available

Celebrate adoptions as much as births, author says

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A new resource for those contemplating adoption has been
published by Presbyterians Affirming Reproductive Options (PARO), a
constituent network of the Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare
Association (PHEWA).
The publication, "Nurturing the Children of God: the Call to Foster
Parenting and Adoption," was written by Lois Rifner, a clinical child
psychologist in Bedford, Ind., and PHEWA president.
Drawing upon her many years of family counseling and many interviews with
adopting parents, Rifner says in her book that the church should see
adoption as a call and should support and celebrate adoptions as much as
births.
Chapters in the resource address the history of adoption, special
difficulties prospective adoptive parents face, the expenses related to
adoption, criteria used by adoption agencies to select adoptive parents,
what to tell an adopted child, adoptive parents' rights to information about
their adopted child, using the World Wide Web to locate adoption agencies
and the right and wrong reasons to choose adoption.
The resource pays special attention to the adoption of "special needs"
children, such as those who have been removed from abusive homes.
And it includes suggestions for how the church can be more supportive,
including a list of resources and a suggested liturgy for an adoption
ceremony or baptism.
"Nurturing the Children of God: the Call to Foster Parenting and Adoption
is available from the Presbyterian Distribution Service at 1-800-524-2612.
Product number is 72-650-00-001. The price is $6 for an individual copy, $5
each for 10-49 copies and $4 each for 50 copies or more.
