World's religious leaders call for day of prayer
for world peace

by Anne Rowe

NEW YORK — Organizers of the World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual
Leaders are issuing a call for people around the globe to participate in a
Day of Prayer for World Peace by joining the Summit's 1000 expected
religious leaders in prayers for peace, tolerance and understanding.
The prayers will occur today at the United Nations-sponsored summit's
opening as the leaders of the world's great faith traditions fill the halls
of the UN with prayers for peace.
For the first time in history, leaders of the world's diverse faith
traditions have gathered in New York to discuss how to forge a partnership
for peace with the UN.
The goal of the Religious Summit is to identify ways in which the worldwide
religious communities can work together with the United Nations on specific
peace, poverty, and environmental initiatives.
At the time the delegates are entering the UN, there will be an on-line
guided meditation from the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Bhuddist
monk, from 3.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. EDT. People around the world can join in
this through www.Beliefnet.com.
