Foundation official bikes 600 miles to raise money for diabetes research

Dennis Murphy and friends raise blisters and $25,000

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Presbyterian Foundation senior vice president Dennis
Murphy and four friends raised $25,000 for diabetes research in July by
successfully completing a 585 bicycle jaunt over one of the most challenging
routes east of the Rocky Mountains.
The seven-day trek from July 15-21, which benefitted the American Diabetes
Association, took the intrepid cyclists from Boston up the Atlantic coast to
Maine and then up and over the over the White Mountains in New Hampshire to
Breton Woods -- including a 13% grade as the last mile of a ten mile climb
-- and then over the Green Mountains in Vermont to the Killington ski
resort.
In all, 55 riders raised $125,000 for research into diabetes, one of the
leading causes of blindness, heart attack and stroke in Americans. More
women die of diabetes than die of breast cancer each year. More people in
the U.S. die of diabetes each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure.
