Jazz great Dave Brubeck to receive award at Stony Point Center

by Jerry L. Van Marter

STONY POINT, N.Y. -- Dave Brubeck, world-renowned jazz artist who performed
at the 1997 Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly in Syracuse, has been
selected by the Stony Point Center to receive the first "John Garcia Gensel
Award for Integrating Faith and the Arts."

The award will be presented to Brubeck at the upcoming conference on "Jazz
and the Church" at the Presbyterian conference center here Oct. 8-10.

"We are thrilled to recognize one of the great figures of jazz," said the
Rev. William G. Carter, dean of the conference and pastor of First
Presbyterian Church in Clark's Summit, Pa. "Dave Brubeck exemplifies a
lifetime of artistic excellence and faithful service to God and humanity."

The award is named for the Rev. John Garcia Gensel, who as pastor of St.
Peter's Lutheran Church in New York was pastor to the jazz community in New
York. His ministry was immortalized by Duke Ellington, who composed "The
Shepherd Who Watches Over the Night Flock" in Gensel's honor.

The award will be presented to Brubeck during the three day symposium on
jazz and the life of faith, a conference that will feature prominent
musicians, scholars and radio and stage performers. It is the first in a
series of Stony Point gatherings to address faith and the arts.

More information is available by calling the Stony Point Conference Center
at 1-800-253-4285.
