PresbyTel hosts ecumenical info-services summit

Participants share helpful high-tech hints, helpful low-tech encouragement

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Representatives of the telephone-based information
services of seven Protestant denominations gathered here on Oct. 18 to
compare notes and discuss the continuing technological revolution that seems
to change their workplaces virtually every day.

	The host of this first-of-its-kind gathering was PresbyTel, the toll-free
telephone information service of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The other
services represented were those of the Anglican Church of Canada, the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Episcopal Church, the Lutheran
Church -- Missouri Synod, the United Church of Christ and the United
Methodist Church.

	At the conclusion of the two-day gathering, participants agreed to continue
meeting, at least annually.

	"We can learn so much from each other," said Kathryn Spry of Infoserv, the
telephone information service of the United Methodist Church. "I can feel
free to ask myself, ‘Is there a better way to do this?'"

	Karen Evans of the Anglican Church of Canada, whose information service is
run out of the denomination's library, said she appreciated the camaraderie.
"No one in my church knows quite what I do," she said, "but this group knows
exactly what I do."

	With a sigh of relief, Eliza Alvarez, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America's Resource Information Service, said, "It's so encouraging to know
we're not the only ones getting weird or angry calls."
