Updated ‘unity and diversity' resource is released

by Gwen Crawley
Coordinator for Unity in the Midst of Diversity
Office of the General Assembly

Unity in the Midst of Diversity, a resource for use by Presbyterians
wishing to take seriously the 1999 General Assembly's request to explore
issues of unity and diversity in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), has been
revised and reissued.

The booklet, which contains bible studies, resource lists and reports of
activities in response to the Assembly's request, is free by calling
Presbyterian Distribution Service at 1-800-524-2612 and asking for product
number OGA–00-054.

Other "unity and diversity" resources are available on the World Wide Web
at http://horeb.pcusa.org/oga/diversity.

More than 100 presbyteries and synods have planned activities which
recognize the considerable diversity among Presbyterians in their
understanding of theology and the Bible. These activities seek to assist
members to learn to listen more openly, to get to know better those of
differing perspectives, to tell their own faith stories and to pray together
for each other.

The focus of the activities varies, with some focusing on racism and others
on human sexuality, for instance.

In all cases, the skills of better, more open communication and caring
between Presbyterians which these activities encourage can be of assistance
to congregations and other governing bodies when they encounter different
viewpoints as they seek faithfully to discern God's will for them and the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
