National Self-Development of People Committee awards 23 grants

28 synod and presbytery SDOP committees are certified

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The National Self-Development of People (SDOP) Committee
was joined by the Synod of the Sun Committee at its Sept. 21-23 in Oklahoma
City.

	Dialogue between the groups outlined mutual accomplishments, goals and
concerns.

	Continuing Education dealt with "The Plight of Rural Farmers" and how
partnerships with PCUSA could assist them. Presenters were Ernest Miller and
Alice Paris of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives Land Assistance
Program; Ricardo Avila of the Centro Cultural de Fargo/Moorhead; and Diana
Stephen, PCUSA Associate for Rural Ministry.

	Problems of minority farmers and migrant workers were particularly noted.
Stephen stressed the need for church people to set up times to discuss the
circumstances of rural farmers, beginning by asking, "Who consumes food?"

	Cynthia White, SDOP associate for program administration, reported on her
recent visit to funded projects and possible project sites in Nicaragua,
Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

	SDOP approved the following international grant proposals: 

* Local Tiles Production Project,Bamenda, Cameroon, $22,840; 

* Community Integrated Fishing Project, Adze-Kose, Ghana $24,520; 

* Food and Livestock Production Kongoto, Uganda, $14,714; 

* Nyamekye Farming Project, Accra, Ghana, $14,865; 

* Rural Self Help Project Tiruvannamalai, India, $4,075; 

* Dysmifag Market Gardening Project, Bamenda, Cameroon, $3,192; 

* Tube-well Irrigation for Vegetable Cultivation, Woe, Volta, Ghana, $5,035; 

* Buddo Christian Piggery Project, Kampala, Uganda, $8,486; 

* Ndamukong Sunrising Women's Group, Bamenda, Cameroon, $3,324; 

* Project Cereal Bank in Daka, Tougan, Sousou, Burkina Faso, $9,029; 

* Aduogo Women's Water Supply, Kabuor, Kenya, $26,300; 

* Integrated Land & Animal Husbandry Operations, Chinnama Palli, India,
$27,010;

* Mbaka Owange Dairy Project, Oyugis, Kenya, $32,210.

	Approved domestic projects were: 

* Tenant Organizing Project, Portland, Ore., $25,000; 

* Barrios Juntos, Albuquerque, N.M., $150,000 over 3 years; 

* SJAC Living Museum/Women's Cultural and Self-Sufficiency Project in La
Garita, Colo., 	$30,000;

* Senior Visions and Enhancement Program, Louisville, Ky., $72,000 over 2
years;

* The Sunshine Shoppe, Oil City, Pa., $66,469 over 3 years; 

* Glendora Economic Community Development Corp., Glendora, Miss., $63,000
over 2 years;

* One Stop Networking Information, Referral and Resource Center, Roanoke,
Va., 	$37,580;

* Smart Talk Sweet Shop, Marks, Miss., $38,000; 

* Monacan Women's Circle Enterprise, Madison Heights, Va., $30,000; 

* Community Sports Complex, Bogue Chitto, Miss., $59,376 over 2 years.

	Four synod and 24 presbytery SDOP committees were certified to review and
fund projects within their bounds.  Synod committees were certified in the
synods of Lakes and Prairies, Rocky Mountains, Sun and Trinity.

	Presbytery committees were certified in the presbyteries of Cherokee,
Eastern Oklahoma, Eastern Virginia, Flint River, Homestead, Hudson River,
National Capital, New York City, Northeast Georgia, Northern New York,
Northern Plains, Pacific, Providence, Scioto Valley, South Alabama, South
Dakota, Western Reserve and a combined committee for the presbyteries of
Redwoods, San Francisco, and San Jose.
