Health awareness resources sent to congregations

New materials help emphasize "Year of the Child"

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The most recent addition to the "Year of the Child"
mission emphasis of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has been mailed to
congregations: a packet of four resources on health issues.

Created by the Office of Health Ministries in the National Ministries
Division and constituent networks of the Presbyterian Health, Education and
Welfare Association (PHEWA), the resources address heart disease, HIV/AIDS
awareness, alcohol and substance abuse and the federal government's
Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

The "Healthy Heart Campaign," which highlights issues related to
cardiovascular diseases, is co-sponsored by the Office of Health Ministries
and the Board of Pensions. The campaign was kicked off at last summer's
General Assembly in Long Beach at the Board's annual 5K fitness event. The
Healthy Heart Campaign resource packet is available by calling
1-888-728-7228, ext. 8011, or by emailing Laura Smith at
Lsmith@ctr.pcusa.org

The Presbyterian AIDS Network has produced awareness materials on HIV/AIDS
and the church's response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The General Assembly
has designated the second Sunday in October or a Sunday near Dec. 1 (World
AIDS Day) to emphasize HIV/AIDS awareness in the PC(USA).

The General Assembly designates a week each year in November as Alcohol and
Other Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Week. Resources for this
emphasis have been produced in conjunction with the Presbyterian Network on
Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (PNAODA).

The Presbyterian Health Network and the Presbyterian Washington Office have
designed a flyer to share statistics and facts about CHIP and how
congregations can assist parents with children who have little or no access
to health care to get into the CHIP program.

More information on these and other PC(USA) health ministries is available
from James Tippett at 1-888-728-7228, ext. 5789, or from David Zuverink at
1-888-728-7228, ext. 5793.
