January event will focus on needs and problems of children

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare
Association (PHEWA), in cooperation with the National Ministries Division
(NMD) of the Presbyterian Church (USA), will sponsor a national social
welfare ministries conference in January.

The 2001 Biennial Social Welfare Ministries Conference, titled, "... A
Little Child Shall Lead Them" (Isaiah 11:6), will be held at Loews
Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel in Nashville, TN, from Jan. 25 to Jan. 28.

In keeping with the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Year of the Child emphasis,
conference participants will discuss the problems facing children, and how
the church might seek solutions.

"The conference isn't designed to sentimentalize children or childhood. It
is designed to raise questions where there are no easy answers," said the
Rev. Nancy K. Troy, the NMD's associate for social welfare organizations and
executive director of PHEWA. "So, attendance is not for the faint-hearted,
but for those who are willing to really tackle the dragons that children
face today."

Conference leaders will include the Rev. Douglas W. Oldenburg, a former
moderator of the General Assembly, who will be the conference theologian,
and the Rev. Eileen Lindner, who will be the plenary speaker. Participants
will also be enlightened and entertained by the Rev. Eugene Lowry, as he
moves from conversation to piano with the little-known story of Christianity
and Jazz. A variety of workshops and site visits are planned.

PHEWA is a voluntary membership organization founded in 1955 and dedicated
to the enactment of social justice and welfare ministries. It works with
middle governing bodies and congregations, striving to make the church more
responsive to the needs of people who are suffering.
