Child advocates to keynote January 2001 conference

	INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- Child advocates from the ecumenical community will
highlight a Jan. 5-7, 2001, conference at Christian Theological Seminary,
Indianapolis. 

	"Children Welcome!" is designed to empower and help support congregationalministries which nurture and care for children. The gathering also will
explore ways Disciples can receive the ministry gifts of children and enterinto ministry with them.

	Speaking during the event will be Anna Rhee, religious affairs director
with the Children's Defense Fund, Washington, D.C., and the Rev. Aubra
Love, founding executive director of the Black Church and Domestic ViolenceInstitute, Atlanta. 

	Disciples leaders taking part include former vice moderator Sandra Bryant,executive director, All Peoples Christian Center, Los Angeles; the Rev.
Claudia A. Highbaugh, chaplain at Harvard University Divinity School,
Boston; and General Minister and President Richard L. Hamm.

	Interested persons may register on-line at
http://www.childrenwelcome.org/registration.htm. The registration fee for
"Children Welcome!" is $80. Conference sponsors include Homeland
Ministries, Christian Theological Seminary, the Christian Church (Disciplesof Christ) in Indiana, the National Benevolent Association, the Oreon E.
Scott Foundation and Greenfield (Ind.) Christian Church. 

	"Children Welcome!" is the result of action by the 1999 General Assembly,
meeting in Cincinnati. The assembly called on the denomination to proclaim
2000 the year for "Welcoming Each Child in the Name of Jesus."

	The conference is an "opportunity to envision a church that is vibrant andgrowing because it is responsive to the needs and gifts of children," said
the Rev. Kaye Edwards, director of family and children's ministries,
Homeland Ministries.
