C. Fred Jenkins, director of constitutional services, dies of a heart attack

by Jerry L. Van Marter and Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Rev. C. Fred Jenkins, 69, director of constitutional
services for the Office of the General Assembly, died Dec. 3 of
complications from a massive heart attack he suffered here Nov. 30. He
never regained consciousness following the attack.

Jenkins, who celebrated the 35th anniversary of his ordination last summer,
was uniquely gifted for his work in OGA. He was both a licensed attorney
and an ordained minister, graduated from Case Western Reserve University Law
School in Cleveland and the Yale University Divinity School in New Haven,
Conn.

Following his graduation from seminary in 1956, Jenkins was ordained by
Western Reserve Presbytery and served as a pastor, teacher and community
service worker until 1973, when he was elected stated clerk of Western
Reserve Presbytery, a position he held until 1983.

In 1979 he entered law school, graduating in 1982. He served an interim
pastorate in Ashtabula, Ohio, from September 1982 until May of 1983 and in
January of 1984 became executive presbyter of Monmouth Presbytery in New
Jersey until joining the OGA staff in 1990. At the time of his death he was
a member of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery.

Jenkins was renowned as a Presbyterian Church historian as well as a
constitutional expert and legal scholar.

In a Dec. 4 letter to church leaders around the country notifying them of
Jenkins' death, General Assembly stated clerk the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick
wrote, "I will dearly miss Fred's wonderful good spirit and courageous
Christian witness, but I give thanks to God for having brought this
wonderful Christian colleague into my circle of friends. In the midst of
our sorrow over Fred's loss, let us all be grateful for the sure and certain
hope of the resurrection and for the wonderful gift that God gave to us all
in C. Fred Jenkins."

Jenkins is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters Betsie Gross and Kitty
Rose; sons Tim and Jeff Jenkins; and a grandson, Garrett Jenkins. All were
with Fred at his death.

A memorial service has been scheduled Dec. 6 at Second Presbyterian Church
in Louisville.

As Kirkpatrick said, "Fred was one of the great saints of the church."
